There are three versions of the Monopoly CD offered, Monopoly (version 1 - for Windows 95/98/ME), Monopoly 2 (Windows 95/98/ME/XP & Mac) and Monopoly 3 (for Windows 98/ME/2000/XP). You can either download or purchase the CD (online or from a local store). There is also Monopoly 2000, but I think that is the same as Monopoly 2. Monopoly (version 1) can only be played against other Monopoly (version 1) players on-line, however Monopoly 2 and Monopoly 3 are compatible, and play games against one another. While I haven't confirmed this, I understand you can run Monopoly 2 on Windows XP. So, if you have WindowsXP, and you wish to play against an opponent who is running Windows95. The player on Windows 95 should get Monopoly 2, and the Player with WindowsXP can run Monopoly 2 or 3.
Prices vary wildly. I hear you can get a free CD on a box of cereal (cheerios, I think) in the US, which contains Monopoly (not sure of the version), Scrabble and others. A posting in the discussion forum here said that the Cheerios version will run on WindowsXP Pro just fine.Free-cdsoftware.com will give you Monopoly 2 for free if you pay s&h ($7.50US). Monopoly 3 generally sells around $20US, but I've heard some have bought Monopoly 3 for $5 in local stores.
If you download it, it's quite large and will take a long time. I have a broadband connection and it took me about 45 minutes, so modem users might want to start the download before going to bed for the night.
If you wish to try before you buy, you can do that. The evaluation version of Monopoly 3, is in fact the same as the full version of the product, so your download will be the same. The program is just locked. It will allow you full access to all its features and functions, but will limit you to 60 minutes of total play time. I run WindowsXP, and could not try the Monopoly (version 1) evaluation, but I understand that is enabled for only 20 minutes.
If you install the evaluation version of Monopoly 3, you can then (quickly and painlessly) unlock it over the internet for about $20. It just takes a couple of seconds. The process will enable the program on THAT PC, so if you're planning on pirating it and giving it to all your friends, forget it. They do, however, allow you to "re-register" your product for free up to 5 times, if you have a system crash, PC upgrade, etc. Beyond that, you're on your own.
With any CD Version, you will be able to play against the computer, other players on your home network, on the internet or a player matching service like GameSpy, or any combination of the above. Playing over a network can be tricky, however. Firewalls and routers can get in the way and prevent you from hosting or even playing a game over the network. I've created a page to help you get set up and solve these problems.
Here are a few places you can find the Program on-line:
Monopoly (version 1 - Windows 95/98/ME)
Monopoly 2 (Windows 95/98 officially, but I hear that it will work on ME & XP)
Monopoly 3 (Windows 98/ME/2000/XP)
