Bottom line, where can I play Monopoly Online?

Want to play Monopoly online against live opponents? Here's where you can play today! Most of these sites are free, or very low in price. Some do require that you own the Monopoly game. I'll let you know about special deals the commercial sites offer. If you know of a site we haven't mentioned here, please e-mail and let us know. I've added hyperlinks for each of these online Monopoly sites on the Weblinks section. You may find others there as well.

GameHouse

GameHouse offers an online game service providing hundreds of games within the US and Internationally including several versions of Monopoly. The fees are reasonable, and includes a free game each month. They're currently offering a free 30-day trial, and allow you to download a free full version when you register. We signed up and canceled the subscription by calling their 800 number, before the end of the trial period. The game continues to work and we were never charged. Yahoo! Games

Yahoo! Games offers an attractive online game service. Right now, they're offering a special deal. They'll give you (via download) a full version of Monopoly for free when you sign up for a free trial of Blockbuster Total Access. They're also offering nice discounts when you subscribe to their Silver, Gold or Platinum game subscription service. Like any of these free programs, you keep the full game even if you cancel the service you're trying.

Opensource Monopoly Servers

The open source community has created a few sites where to play Monopoly online, including "monopd" and "Kapitalist". The software to run or play on one of these servers is free (Open Source Licensing), so either use one of the servers out there, or host your own.

There are a few places you can play Monopoly online with monopd (e.g., solarium.devnullteam.org). You'll need to install monopd software on your computer first, of course. You have several options like "Atlantik", available for Linux only, and "gtkAtlantic" for Linux and Windows, and others. Others may be available soon, including a Java, web-based client, that psmonopoly would be glad to host for the playing community. Check out our Weblinks section to get a copy, and further information on how to play online in another article on this site.

Gamespy.com

These folks offer player matching for several Monopoly versions. They have player matching lobbies for a variety of games, including Monopoly. There, you can chat, find other players, and a host of other features. Gamespy is free, however there is advertising to support the site. You can subscribe (subscriptions range from $5/month to $80/year), to receive additional features. I believe that subscribers can also eliminate advertising. There are Monopoly leagues playing on Gamespy as well.

Casesladder Online

Casesladder Online supports Monopoly (version 1) CD only. You need to be a member of the free league. You'll have to create an account (for free), log on, go into "Categories", then "Chat" under community, to find the Monopoly lobby. The league here is pretty busy at most hours.

IRCopoly

IRCopoly is an IRC based monopoly type game. It uses mozbot for game play via irc, and adds php for web based game play. It is in early development, and the alpha is hosted at irc.freenode.net #ircopoly. Visit them at ircopoly.com for more information.
