For those of you who are not interested in buying the Monopoly CD, and would like to find an alternative game to play, there are a large number of freeware, shareware and Open Source versions of the game, for both on-line and off line play. There are even a few web-based games. This article describes some of them, hyperlinks are available in our Weblinks Download section.
These games (and the source code) are free to use, but you must adhere to the terms of the license agreement. They were developed within the Open Source community, and run on a wide range of platforms and operating systems. Some of these are to be run on servers, as a game host site, other will run on a PC. Many of these work for over the internet play.
These are games which are generally free to use (or at least try), at this writing none of them supported network play. They are available for various operating systems (Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.).
These are officially licensed products, and do cost money. If you're interested in running Monopoly on the Palm OS or PocketPC, you're limited to Handmark's Monopoly, or downloading the CD version.
